Are you waking up stiff or in pain because your mattress is too firm? (cont'd)

“Recent research from Europe has actually shown that medium-firm mattresses are better for low back pain than firm mattresses, debunking the myth that firmer mattresses are better for you.”

In addition to neck and back pain and stiffness, 82% of respondents said they tossed and turned at night - another tell-tale sign of a mattress which is too firm.

“Firm mattresses put extra pressure on the areas which come into contact with the mattress, namely the hips and shoulders. This pressure cuts off  blood supply, occasionally leading to bursitis and, ultimately, the subconscious need to roll over in bed.  All of this contributes to poor sleep quality.”

Dr Edwards and his team of health care practitioners are on a mission to improve Australia’s sleep quality by fitting back pain sufferers to the mattress and pillow that achieves “neutral spine position” – a state which minimises pressure on discs, muscles and nerves in the spine.
