A Major Population Health Issue (Arthritis SA & Osteoporosis SA)
CPD Seminar- GPs, Staff and Nurses

Osteoporosis (together with other musculoskeletal conditions such as arthritis) was declared a National Health Prioroty Area in July 2002. With the ageing of the population, the burden of osteoporosis on the economic and health care systems is expected to increase. Hip fractures were projected to increase by 31% between 1996 and 2006, to double by 2026, and to quadruple by 2051. This is due to substantial increases in the number of elderly persons in Australia over that time. The aim of this seminar it to update GPs knowledge, awareness, skills and behaviours in prevention and treating patients with Osteoporosis.

BJD 2009 Global Network
Conference and Patient Advocacy Meeting

USBJD is pleased to announce plans for the Bone and Joint Decade Global Network Conference, to be held October 21 – 24, 2009, at the JW Marriott in Washington, DC, and hosted by the USBJD.

Official patient, health care professional, and specialty society representatives from about 60 countries will be attending. Invitations for the President, Chief Staff Officer, and Decade representative have been extended to all USBJD participating organisations to attend. This conference represents the first time in history such a broad-based assemblage of musculoskeletal organisations will meet in the United States.

The primary goals of the conference are

To raise awareness and advocate for musculoskeletal health

To develop a roadmap for the future to build on the momentum created by the Bone and Joint Decade.

The program consists of a two-day Patient Advocacy Meeting, October 21-22, and the Global Network Conference, October 23-24, a two-day education and a strategic planning meeting for health care providers, patients, patient advocates, government officials, and industry.

During the afternoon and evening of Thursday, October 22, the program will focus on raising awareness of musculoskeletal conditions on Capitol Hill for U.S. delegates, including patients and the leadership of USBJD participating organisations. Arrangements will be made for international delegates to meet with officials from their own embassies, and then to join the U.S. delegates on Capitol Hill.

Action: The USBJD invites you to start planning your attendance, as well as to begin thinking about what messages you would like to pass on to your Government through the representatives in Washington DC. With these ideas, the program will be designed to focus the messages relevant to each NAN. Public Lecture - Hypothetical "A Woman in Pain"

In the spirit of the IASP’s Global Year Against Pain in Women, the Australian Pain Society is joining with the Arthritis Foundation of Australia (WA), and the Bone and Joint Decade 2000-2010, to present a Hypothetical for the public entitled “A Woman In Pain”. It is directed at all women who suffer pain, as well as their families, carers and friends. Arthritis Week in WA will also be launched at this event by Ms Lisa Scaffidi, Lord Mayor of Perth.
Painful conditions affecting women have a huge global economic and human impact. Yet, at all levels of Government there is still widespread lack of awareness and recognition of these health-care issues. Surveys show that chronic pain is generally more prevalent in women than men; however women are less likely to receive a meaningful diagnosis and proper treatment. Epidemiological research has also shown that women generally experience more recurrent pain, as well as more severe and longer lasting pain than do men. As one woman who has experienced this issue says "I really think a lot of women in pain are not taken seriously. Because they have children, their pain is put down to the stress of them being a Mum."

The Hypothetical will be Moderatored by Mr Ben Horgan (National Action Network Coordinator,Australia Bone and Joint Decade 2000-2010) and will feature the following panelists:
Dr Allyson Browne – Clinical Psychologist
Dr Nicola Cook - Rheumatologist
Dr Stephanie Davies – Pain Physician
Ms Polly Delaney - Consumer
Professor Nicky Leap - Midwife
Ms Petrina Lawrence - Consumer
Dr Helen Slater - Physiotherapist
Dr Barbara True - Rheumatologist

Managing pain and soft tissue injuries with CBT

Pain is a major burden for individuals and organisations, and psychological factors or 'yellow flags' play a significant part in this. Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) helps optimise outcomes - reducing disability and distress, and improving return to work, for example - and is now being integrated into the management of injured workers. We'll cover how to assess people with pain and injuries both during the acute and chronic phases and how to conduct CBT at different stages in the current compensation context in NSW.
Hosted by the Australian Pain Society, this day is designed to assist all counselling professionals, including psychologists, counsellors, rehabilitation providers and psychiatrists, involved in the rehabilitation of people with persisting pain following an injury. This course attracts 7 APS professional development points.

A pain in the neck: Musculoskeletal consequences of road traffic crashes

When American orthopaedic surgeon Harold Crowe coined the term "whiplash injury" in 1928 at a medical meeting in San Francisco, little did he know how quickly the term would spread across the country, enter the medical literature, and eventually become a household word. Now the term is often used thoughtlessly to denote any type of neck injury.

The purpose of this seminar is to provide an opportunity for interested people to learn about important research conducted by The Whiplash Research Unit, Department of Physiotherapy, University of Queensland, and the work in this area by the Royal Perth Hospital Trauma Registry, as well as for them to gain a better understanding of the plight of sufferers and the real costs of these disorders to our community.

Invited Speakers include Dr Michele Sterling, a physiotherapist who will present the ground breaking work and research of the Whiplash Research Unit at the University of Queensland.

Dr Sudhakar Rao, is a General Surgeon in Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic surgery and Head of the Trauma Service at Royal Perth Hospital. He will discuss current triage/management of patients with acute neck pain following road traffic crashes.

Mr Fab Zanuttigh, from the Insurance Commission of Western Australia will speak about the costs of musculoskeletal injuries to the community drawing upon statistics compiled by the insurer.

And Mr David Buchanan, PhD student, playwrite, poet, musician, and road crash victim will represent the human face of musculoskeletal injuries.
