WHAT IS THE BJD


The Bone and Joint Decade 2000 – 2010 (BJD) is an umbrella organisation for professional societies, governments, patient advocacy groups, industry and researchers who work together to make bone and joint health the business of every Australian

AIM OF BJD
  • » Raise awareness of the growing burden on society of musculoskeletal disorders caused by poor bone and joint health
  • » Promote care and prevention being better than surgical or medical cure
  • » Empower patients to participate in care of their own bones and joints
  • » To advance research on cost-effective prevention, diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders

WHY ARE WE?

In Australia, musculoskeletal disorders are

  • » the second most common cause of presentation to a general practitioner
  • » the third leading cause of health system expenditure with an estimated total cost of over $3 billion (1993-1994)
  • » responsible for over 300,000 hospital admissions, 15 million medical services and 13 million prescriptions per annum

Worldwide

  • » Back pain is the second leading cause of sick leave
  • » One quarter of health expenditure in developing countries will be spent on trauma related care
  • » Fractures relating to osteoporosis with 1 in 2 women and 1 in 3 men likely to be affected

Australian BJD wins best video award at 2008 Annual World Conference


AIM: 

• To encourage National Action Networks and individuals to develop public information campaigns which promote the Decade’s goals in the form of edited videos.
• To share local experience and innovative ideas about successful messages directly related to musculoskeletal health and science.

During the 2008 Annual World Network Conference in India the entry videos were featured in a special screening for conference delegates, and the best submitted videos were chosen as "Strong bones" entertainment programme for young people (Australia) and "Straighten up" (Sweden).
