One in six Australians – that's more than 3.4 million people - has arthritis. Arthritis Australia is the peak arthritis organisation in Australia. It is supported by affiliate offices in every state and territory. Arthritis Australia:

ARTHRITIS NT

Arthritis and Osteoporosis NT is a largely voluntary organisation that provides support, advice and information to people living with arthritis and osteoporosis. We organise warm water exercise classes and tai chi sessions to help our members stay active, and also run chronic disease self management courses to help our members get the most out of life. We have several support groups available for members to join. Our office provides access to special books, videos and resources, often unavailable elsewhere, at discounted prices or for borrowing from our library.

AUSTRALIAN PILATES METHOD ASSOCIATION (APMA)

The Pilates Method of exercise aims to improve the core strength of the body, focusing specifically on the pelvic floor deep abdominal and deep back muscles. With these muscles more active when the body moves, the spine and pelvic stability can be greatly improved. Pilates is a movement therapy that provides assisted movement with low loads through joint range and is an excellent form of exercise prescription that includes weight bearing throughout the body.
In an APMA accredited Studio Pilates exercises are prescribed on an individual basis to strengthen the joints and improve joint range and flexibility. Pilates is an excellent form of exercise for most injuries/pathologies as exercises can be adapted to the needs of individuals whilst still remaining challenging. Strict guidelines are implemented by the APMA Council to ensure all members stay updated in their skills and knowledge base.

Osteoarthritis is a disease affecting joints. Of all CAM therapies, chiropractic continually rates high among utilisation and satisfaction surveys. Independent Living Centres are information resource centres for assistive technology. Each centre displays a comprehensive range of products and equipment to assist with daily living activities. Everybody is welcome to use the ILC services, including people with disabilities, older people, their carers, parents, advocates and other service providers, health professionals, architects, builders, suppliers, manufacturers and students. You can try out products and equipment and select those most suitable prior to purchase. Please note that we do not sell items, we only display them.
Each centre has a localised products and equipment database to complement the display. The occupational therapists on our info-lines use this database to provide information that is relevant to the individual caller’s needs. You can use our info-line services by phone, fax or email. Most of the ILC services are free to the public.

The Computer Assistive Technology Services (CATS)provides information, advice and support regarding assistive technology options for people with disabilities. TECHNICAL AID TO THE DISABLED (TAD) NSW

TAD make and supply custom designed aids for people with disabilities, loan computers for a small annual fee and provide information on aids and technology as well as previous technical solutions and allied technology through a lending library and free internet access. They also have volunteer speakers to speak to community groups about their work. Where no suitable commercial products are available TADNSW creates or modifies equipment for people with a disability. Devices are made by volunteers to keep costs to a minimum. Donated computers and ancillary equipment are also loaned to clients and maintained for a minimal annual fee.
